The Dorothy G. McManigal memorial scholarship was established in 2021 to honor her life and legacy and the importance of education and lifelong learning. Dorothy Godknecht grew up in Boyd and Dufur, attending the one room schoolhouses that dotted Wasco County and graduating from Dufur in 1942.
At the end of the Great Depression years, post high school education was out of reach for most Dufur High School students. Dorothy always credited her success in receiving a university education to a Dufur teacher that encouraged her to apply for a scholarship. She received a scholarship that paid tuition for 2/3s of the year, a grand total of $60.
Dorothy attended the University of Oregon School of Journalism, graduating in 1946 and began her reporting career in her Sophomore year as the first female student campus correspondent to the Oregon Journal, where she was hired upon graduation, when women staffers were a rarity.
Dorothy fondly recalled over the years how she would not have attended college if the encouragement and the scholarship hadn’t been available through Dufur High School, a continued legacy as her granddaughter currently works to transform the Dufur Scholarship program into the Ranger Pride Education Foundation.
80 years later, her great grandaughter graduated as a Valedictorian of the Class of 2022.
